North Vancouver Backyard Retreat

A large, overgrown hedge had written off this corner of a North Vancouver property for years. It was swallowing space that, once cleared and regraded, turned out to be one of the best spots on the lot.

What replaced it is a fully considered outdoor retreat: a pitched-roof pergola, a concrete paver patio, and an integrated sauna — all working together in a footprint that, not long ago, didn’t exist.

The pergola sets the tone. A pitched roof finished in corrugated steel gives the structure a permanence that feels deliberate — built for the North Shore climate as much as for the look. A custom cedar gate marks the entrance to the space, a detail that signals what’s inside was designed with intention, not assembled. The concrete paver patio grounds everything beneath it: durable, low-maintenance, and laid to work with the grade of the site. It forms the foundation that the rest of the space is built around.

The sauna was sited and integrated to feel like a natural part of the outdoor living space rather than something dropped in as an afterthought. Positioned within the pergola structure, it turns the retreat into a genuine wellness destination — without leaving the property.

Getting three distinct elements to work cohesively within a previously unusable footprint required precise planning. The craftsmanship on the pergola structure, in particular, reflects the level of detail that separates a well-built space from one that simply looks good in photos.

The result is a backyard that finally earns its square footage.
